Something fishy going on

Working with The Steel Valley Project supported by the Environment Agency, St. Ann's Catholic, Oughtibridge Primary, Stocksbridge Infants and Junior Schools each had a classroom with fish tanks containing male and female Three-Spined Sticklebacks, with the intention to observe the life cycle and breeding patterns of this fish.
In April, each school was given clear tanks with females in between two tanks with a male in each one on either side. The males were responsible for showing of off their big blue eyes and orange bellies as well as make a nest for the female to lay eggs in. The school pupils watched and reported on the behavior of the Sticklebacks as well as feeding and caring for them.
Steel Valley Project Officer Kate Hughes said,This project aims to bring to light the fact that although it may be difficult to see, our many local rivers, ponds and streams are quietly teaming with life. Working with these young people on this programme helps to explore these special habitats with the plants and animals in them. It links in very well with the National Curriculum and provides opportunity for creative artwork, discussions on environmental issues as well as looking at local geography, scientific topics and personal responsibility and animal care.
