Access management work at Whitwell Moor alongside Millstones Wood has been carried out by the environmental volunteer team and project officers throughout August aimed at minimising the impact of current informal routes on our local landscape and on the local flora and fauna and also to improve the existing public footpath network.
This is a joint venture between Steel Valley Project, the Public Right of Way unit at Sheffield City Council and Broomhead Estate and their tenants and has involved the cutting back of overhanging Beech trees in order to uncover the official public footpath to the trigg point alongside the wall that separates the wood from the moor. The current informal routes across the moor are boggy and wet which have resulted in the widening of the paths in users' attempts to stay dry. The recent tree clearance work carried out will enable the development of the public footpath due to be carried out by contractors in October. The public right of way will be kept open.
The recent work has allowed for the training of volunteers in chainsaw operations, brushcutter use, tree climbing and woodland management. The Project Officers have been funded by the Stone to Steel Project.
